What are the Sacraments?

As Catholics, we believe the sacraments are outward signs of inward grace—a beautiful truth described by St. Augustine. Each sacrament involves tangible actions, words, and symbols, yet at its heart, it is a powerful moment where we personally encounter God's grace.

Far more than traditions or symbolic gestures, the sacraments are living encounters with Christ. They are a vital part of our faith, helping us to grow closer to God and live out our Catholic calling.

The Sacraments: Gifts of Grace

Jesus Christ himself instituted the seven sacraments as a way for us to experience His presence and love. Through the sacraments, we:
-
Participate in the life of the Church
-
Grow in faith and holiness
-
Receive grace to live as disciples of Christ
-

As we receive the sacraments, the Holy Spirit transforms us, making us more like Jesus and strengthening us to live out the Gospel.

“The sacraments are the masterworks of God...in the new and everlasting covenant.”
– Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1116

The Seven Sacraments

The seven sacraments are grouped into three key categories:

Sacraments of Initiation

These sacraments lay the foundation of Christian life and welcome us into the Church.

-
Baptism – Our entry into the Christian community, cleansed of original sin and reborn as children of God.
-
Eucharist – The source and summit of our faith, where we receive the Body and Blood of Christ.
-
Confirmation – Strengthens us with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and deepens our commitment to the Church.
Sacraments of Healing

These sacraments offer God’s forgiveness and comfort during times of sin, illness, or suffering.

-
Reconciliation (Confession) – Through God's mercy, we are forgiven and restored to grace.
-
Anointing of the Sick – Brings spiritual (and sometimes physical) healing, peace, and courage to those facing serious illness or old age.
Sacraments of Communion and Mission

These sacraments help us serve and build up the Body of Christ through love and leadership.

-
Marriage – A covenant of love between husband and wife, reflecting Christ’s love for the Church.
-
Holy Orders – A special calling to serve the Church through ordained ministry as a deacon, priest, or bishop.
