Holy Orders

“Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry. It includes three degrees: episcopate (bishop), presbyterate (priest), and diaconate (deacon).”
— Catechism of the Catholic Church 1536

Who is Called to Holy Orders?

Only baptized Catholic men are called by the Church to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. This sacred calling is a lifelong commitment to serve the Church and continue the mission of Christ.

  • Bishops and priests receive a special grace to act “in persona Christi” — in the person of Christ — exercising their ministry not by their own power, but by Christ’s authority.

  • Deacons share in Christ’s mission in a unique way, serving the Church and the community through word, service, and charity (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1570).
