Anointing of the Sick

“By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that He may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ.”
— Catechism of the Catholic Church 1499

What is the Anointing of the Sick?

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a sacred sign of God’s healing presence and compassionate care. It is offered to those who are seriously ill, preparing for surgery, or facing the challenges of aging or chronic health conditions.

This sacrament is not only for the dying—it’s for anyone in need of strength, peace, and healing, whether in body, mind, or spirit.

Understanding the Names of This Sacrament

Throughout history, this sacrament has been known by several names, each offering a different perspective:

  • The “Last Rites” refers to when this sacrament is given to someone near death. While important, this view alone can narrow our understanding. The sacrament is not only for the end of life—it is for anyone seeking healing in a time of serious illness or vulnerability.

  • Extreme Unction comes from Latin and means “last anointing.” It highlights the act of anointing with oil, a powerful symbol of God’s healing grace. This anointing strengthens the person to face illness, suffering, or even the passage into eternal life.

  • Viaticum means “food for the journey” and refers specifically to the Eucharist received by someone who is dying. It sustains them for the journey home to God, but it can also nourish someone in the midst of healing.

  • The Sacrament of the Sick brings the focus clearly into view. This is about God’s desire to bring comfort, strength, and healing in times of illness or suffering. It reveals a God who walks closely with us and who acts through this sacrament to support us in our time of need.

What This Sacrament Tells Us About God

  • God is Love. His love is always directed toward healing, wholeness, and comfort.

  • God is near. He strengthens us through this sacrament and through the support of the Church, family, and caregivers.

  • God walks with the sick and suffering. In every moment of illness or fear, God is with us—restoring hope and offering grace.
