Reconciliation

“Those who approach the sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God’s mercy for the offense committed against him, and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins and which by charity, by example, and by prayer labors for their conversion.”
— Catechism of the Catholic Church 1422

What is Reconciliation?

Also known as Confession or Penance, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a beautiful gift of God’s mercy and love. In it, we confess our sins, express sorrow, and receive God’s forgiveness—and through this process, we are reconciled both to God and to the Church community.

Reconciliation helps us recognize when we’ve turned away from God, and it lovingly restores us to right relationship with Him and with others.

Why the Different Names?

This sacrament has been known by three traditional titles, each reflecting an important aspect of what takes place:

  •

  • Confession highlights the act of honestly naming our sins before God and a priest. While important, this alone isn’t the whole story. Confession helps prepare our hearts—but the sacrament is about much more than listing what we’ve done wrong.

  • Penance emphasizes our desire to make things right. In response to God’s mercy, we offer prayers or actions as a sign of our repentance. But again, this isn't the full focus. It's not primarily about what we do.

  • Reconciliation brings the clearest lens. This is the heart of the sacrament: God taking the initiative to restore us—healing relationships, renewing our spirits, and welcoming us home. Through Reconciliation, we experience the depth of God’s love, mercy, and desire for unity.

What Reconciliation Teaches Us About God

  • God is Love. Forgiveness is always possible. God desires healing, not punishment.

  • God knows our hearts. Naming our sins helps us open our hearts and receive the grace we need to change.

  • God desires unity. Reconciliation brings us back into right relationship—with God and with one another.
