Baptism

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.”
— Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213

Baptism is the first sacrament of initiation and a profound moment in the life of every Catholic. Through Baptism:

  • We are freed from sin

  • We become children of God

  • We are united with Christ and His Church

  • We are called to share in God’s mission in the world

What Does Baptism Tell Us About God?

Baptism—and the other Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist)—tell us three key truths about our faith:

  1. We Belong
Baptism is a reminder that God wants each of us to belong—first to Him, and then to one another in the Church community. Just as the Holy Trinity is a divine family, we are called to build families and communities of love and faith.

  2. We Have a Purpose
Baptism reminds us that our lives have meaning. We are called to know, love, and serve God—especially by loving and serving one another.

  3. We Are Deeply Loved
One of the prayers during the Baptism ceremony beautifully captures this truth:

“God is the giver of all life, human and divine… You are the first teachers of your child in the ways of faith. May you also be the best of teachers, bearing witness to that faith in all you say and do.”
