Confirmation
“Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the ‘sacraments of Christian initiation,’ whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace.”
— Catechism of the Catholic Church 1285
What is Confirmation?
Confirmation, together with Baptism and the Eucharist, forms the foundation of Christian life. These three sacraments are known as the Sacraments of Initiation, drawing us into full communion with Christ and His Church. While Baptism begins our faith journey and the Eucharist nourishes it, Confirmation seals us with the gift of the Holy Spirit, strengthening us to live out our faith with conviction and purpose.
In this sacrament, we are anointed and commissioned—called to be active participants in the Church, empowered to serve others, and guided by the grace of the Holy Spirit.
Why It Matters
Confirmation reveals the nature of the God we believe in and the relationship we are invited into:
-
Belonging
Confirmation affirms that we belong to God—and to one another. God calls us into communion not just as individuals, but as a community of faith, bound by love and service. -
Mission
We are anointed for a purpose: to know, love, and serve God in our daily lives. Confirmation strengthens our ability to be disciples of Christ in the world. -
Empowerment
Through the prayers and ritual of Confirmation, God blesses us with the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, equipping us for the journey of faith.
The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit
-
Wisdom – To see as God sees
-
Understanding – To grasp the truths of faith more deeply
-
Right Judgment (Counsel) – To choose rightly and act justly
-
Courage (Fortitude) – To stand strong in faith, even when it's hard
-
Knowledge – To grow in love and truth through learning
-
Reverence (Piety) – To honor God and all creation
-
Wonder and Awe (Fear of the Lord) – To marvel at God’s greatness and goodness
